Faith That Amazed Jesus: A Soldier’s Trust

Hi friend!

Welcome back to Tales of Grace! As we continue our Redefining Healing series, I pray these stories stir your faith and remind you of God’s incredible power to restore.

Faith doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, it’s as simple as believing that God’s word is enough.

When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help.  “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.”
Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?”
The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.  I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.  But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment

Matthew 8: 5-13

In Matthew 8, we meet a Roman centurion, a man of authority and status. Yet, despite his power, he faced a problem he couldn’t fix—his servant was paralyzed and suffering terribly. Instead of relying on his own strength, he turned to Jesus. And what he said next was astonishing:

“Just say the word, and my servant will be healed.”

Think about that for a moment. This man, a soldier, didn’t ask for a sign. He didn’t question if Jesus could do it. He simply believed. And Jesus? He marveled at his faith! Imagine that—the Son of God marveling at a human’s faith!

I don’t know about you, but that challenges me. How often do I hesitate, overthink, or look for proof before trusting God? Yet, the centurion didn’t waver. He believed that if Jesus spoke, healing would come. And it did. At that very moment, his servant was healed.

This story reminds me that faith isn’t about knowing everything—it’s about trusting the One who does. Maybe you’re carrying a heavy burden—an unanswered prayer, a broken relationship, or a situation that feels impossible. If that’s you, can I encourage you? Bring it to Jesus. You don’t have to have all the answers or fix it on your own. Simply trust that His word is enough—because it always is.
