Burn the Ships: A Call to Surrender

Hi friend,
Welcome back to Tales of Grace and this week’s Abide Mondays. I’m so glad you’re here.
Yesterday morning, as I prayed, I asked the Holy Spirit to help me choose Him—always. I long for my heart to be fully surrendered, for my desires to align with His will. And later that morning, at church, someone spoke about burning the ships, and in that moment, I felt the Holy Spirit whisper to my heart: Let it go. Burn that ship.
I knew exactly what He meant. And to be honest? It’s hard. Really hard. Because the thing He’s asking me to walk away from is something I enjoy. It’s comfortable. Familiar. Letting go feels like losing a part of myself. But deep down, I also know the truth—He is far better. Still, surrender is costly. It’s choosing to deny myself when every part of me wants to hold on. But isn’t that what following Jesus is all about? Taking up our cross daily and laying down the things that pull us away from Him?
This week, our anchor scripture is Philippians 3:8:
“But more than that, I count everything as loss compared to the priceless privilege and supreme advantage of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord [and of growing more deeply and thoroughly acquainted with Him—a joy unequaled]. For His sake, I have lost everything, and I consider it all garbage, so that I may gain Christ.”
Paul knew what it meant to surrender everything for Jesus. And he didn’t just endure the loss—he counted it as nothing compared to the treasure of knowing Christ. That’s the kind of heart I want. The kind that sees Jesus as more precious than anything this world could ever offer.
So this week, I’m praying that the Holy Spirit would anchor our hearts in this truth—that choosing Jesus is always better than the fleeting comforts of instant gratification. That we would have the courage to burn the ships, trusting that whatever we leave behind is nothing compared to the fullness of life we gain in Him.
Let’s pray:
Father, You are worth more than anything this world could offer. But sometimes, surrender feels impossible. Help us to trust You enough to let go. Give us the courage to walk away from anything that keeps us from fully following You. Anchor our hearts in Philippians 3:8, so that we would see the surpassing worth of knowing You above all else. Holy Spirit, strengthen us to choose Jesus, again and again, until our hearts are fully His. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Let’s walk in surrender this week, friend. He is always worth it.
With love and grace,
The Founder of Tales of Grace
